Flames of Rebellion

On his release from gaol, all Patrick Flanagan wanted was a good woman, a family and a peaceful life. Then he heard the call that reverberated around the world. Gold!

Leaving Moreton Bay behind, he jumps aboard The Cumberland to work for his passage to the goldfields. On the voyage he befriends Fergus, an old sailor at the crossroads of new technology. Together the pair jump ship in Melbourne and head towards the Ballarat Goldfields to make their fortune.

But, their dreams of easy riches are soon shattered as they not only battle the elements and the elusive nature of the gold, but also corrupt administrators and brutal law enforcement officers of the Colony, including an old acquaintance of Patrick’s.

I have always had an interest in all things history related, with Australian history in particular and Australian military history specifically. It may be an obsession, but that’s for the health professionals to determine. I’ve always enjoyed studying historical events that have led to us becoming the people we are today, those events have set the compass for our collective values and beliefs. The Eureka Stockade is one of these major events that still has relevance today and is one of the reasons I was drawn to write a story against this backdrop.

When I’m not delving into the past I can usually be found out and about, with my kids, playing guitar, alternately driving and fixing my Landcruiser Rusty and hopefully finding the occasional perfect campsite somewhere around South East Queensland, rolling out the swag and leaving the city behind.

I live in a Northern suburb of Brisbane with my twenty year old son, two teenage daughters and my much better half, not to mention two dogs, a couple of budgies and Rusty. So far I have been a soldier, mechanic, security guard, sound and lighting technician, car wash manager and a long term employee of the Queensland Government.
