Final Flight

by Jean Lopez.

Jim Dalton knew his luck would not last forever. He loved being a fighter pilot, even with all its dangers. Spellbound, he watched as the Messerschmidt 110 pumped bullets directly into the Hurricane’s fuselage…

Many years later a team of aviation archaeologists were excavating a Hurricane that had fallen during the Battle of Britain and discovered Jim’s remains, along with a fob watch, wallet and dilapidated photo. The artefacts are sent to Chris Dalton, Jim’s brother, who lives in Australia.

By sheer luck, the photo is recognised by Jim’s aunt as that of Jo Rolfe, his girlfriend at the time. Jim’s brother, Chris, arrives in England to organise the funeral and is determined to find Jo, whose grief at the time knew no bounds, to inform her that Jim had been found. Together Chris and Jo attend the funeral and at last she finds peace.

Hurricanes, Spitfires, Messerschmidt, Dorniers were all part of the Battle of Britain, fighting it out to keep Britain free. The lives given by those few, for so many, will never be forgotten.

A very realistic and down to earth account of what it would have been like to be there. I enjoyed the story very much!
